THE TIMES, By Paul Gregutt
Wine of the Week, 2022 Albariño
Among this Oregon winery's many pioneering achievements was the introduction of this classic Spanish white wine to the Pacific Northwest. If you've ever been to Spain (and you kinda like the music), you know that this is the go-to crisp white wine for all kinds of fried seafood and Spanish cheeses. This New World version is a spicy, peppery, vivacious wine that deftly stacks bright fruit flavors of apple, pear, and white peach with skin flavors and crisp acids. There's also a finishing hint of salinity that spreads out through the end palate. A lovely white wine perfect for summer sipping.

90 points, 2018 East Hill Block Reserve Malbec
The Abacela story began with a scientific approach to finding the best spot in the U.S. to plant and make fine Tempranillo. Over 25 years later, after accomplishing this goal, they continue to grow and diversify with other varieties like Malbec. This is lauded as a great vintage for them and it shows. Nice concentration of fruit on the nose, showing depth before the first sip. The palate continues that concentration adding a nice tannic structure. It can still age for another year or so to soften the edges, but is drink really well now.
GREAT NORTHWEST WINE, April 2023
94 points, 2018 Reserve Malbec
Outstanding! Gold medal; Pioneer Earl Jones planted the five primary Bordeaux varieties when he established Fault Line Vineyards in 1995, but Malbec has been the chosen one from the start. Its footprint has been expanded over time and now accounts for 7.5 acres — nearly 10% of Abacela’s 76 acres. Within those documented 25 variety site trials, Malbec falls within the “consistently great wines” category, and our panel would agree. This effort by longtime winemaker Andrew Wenzl attracted immediate attention in the glass for its elevated level of extraction, enjoyable inky approach and stylish notes of blackberry, black cherry and bacon. The oak influence is attractively balanced across that broadly structured midpalate, which brings along secondary hints of earthiness, anise and lavender.

90 points, 2022 Albariño
Bright fruit here with pineapples, pears, lemons and nectarines on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with crisp acidity and juicy stone and tropical fruit. Drink now.
91 Points, 2018 Reserve Tempranillo
Attractive nose of plums, spiced cherries, praline and chocolate. Spicy and broad with a full body, powdery tannins and chocolatey, fleshy finish. Drink now.
OREGON WINE PRESS, March 2023
Cellar Select, 2018 Reserve East Hill Block Malbec
Boastful aromas of blackberry, clove, vanilla, oregano, thyme and a hint of cherry extract. Solid structure creates a foundation for intense flavors of blackberry, plum and woody herbs. Bright acid provides a lift through the long finish. An approachably, smooth mouthfeel seals the experience.
OREGON WINE PRESS, February 2023
Cellar Select, 2018 Tempranillo Reserve
Showing enticing aromas and flavors in its youth, yet cellaring for a few years should reveal this wine at its best. Aromas of apple baked in butter with cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and orange zest. Tightly woven on the palate with firm tannins, bright red fruits, vanilla and toasted wood.
Cellar Select, 2019 Tannat
Black fruit, cinnamon, fennel and a hint of oaky vanilla mark the nose and combine into a savory black pepper sauce on the palate. It is Tannat; expect robust tannin. Be patient and give it time to mellow and unfold.

90 points, 2021 Albariño
Aromas of jasmine, peach and fresh tropical fruit. Medium-bodied with a pleasant, supple texture. Fruity with a soft finish. Drink now.
90 points, 2019 Fiesta Tempranillo
Attractive tempranillo with black cherry, crushed stone and purple fruit on the nose. Medium body with bright acidity and lightly chewy tannins. Firm and linear at the end. Drinkable now, but better in 2023.

92 points & Editors' Choice, 2017 South East Block Reserve Tempranillo
Aromas of dark, crushed berry, wood spice and whiffs of tar lead to full-feeling, beautifully balanced flavors. There are oodles of structure behind it all. It's an impressive offering of the variety—a true standout.
92 points & Editors' Choice, 2019 Grenache
White pepper aromas jump out of the glass, followed by notes of dried herb and red fruit, showing delineation and detail. The palate shows terrific purity and length. It's an eye-opener.
91 points & Editors' Choice, 2019 Barrel Select Tempranillo
This producer makes an assortment of Tempranillo, with this one falling on the “fresh and fruity” side by self-description. It's all that and more. The aromas and flavors offer notes of red and darker fruit and assorted barrel spices. It's straight-up, unabashed, pour-another-glass enjoyment.
91 points & Editors' Choice, 2019 Fiesta Tempranillo
This producer makes an assortment of Tempranillo, with this one falling on the “fresh and fruity” side by self-description. It’s all that and more. The aromas and flavors offer notes of red and darker fruit and assorted barrel spices. It’s straight-up, unabashed, pour-another-glass enjoyment.
91 points & Editors' Choice, 2019 Tinta Amarela
Appealing berry, coffee, herb and spice aromas lead to full-bodied dark cherry flavors. There's a lot of structure behind it all. It's straight-up enjoyment.
90 points, 2018 Syrah
The aromas are brooding but appealing, with notes of berry and wood spice. Fuller-feeling black cherry flavors follow, showing the structure of the vintage. It lingers on the finish. Give it time to open up.
90 points & Editors' Choice, 2019 Tannat
Blackberry aromas are at the fore, but wood spice accents are there, too. Full-bodied dark fruit flavors follow. There's a lot of structure behind it all. It's an impressive wine at a terrific price.
VINEPAIR.COM, August 2022
90 points, 2019 Malbec
Earl and Hilda Jones came to the Umpqua Valley determined to make wine from the Spanish Tempranillo grape. It’s a story of determination in the face of outside doubt. It worked, and today Abacela is one of the most influential wineries in the Valley and beyond. Although Malbec is not a Spanish grape, it’s a good thing they planted it on their estate. This wine is meaty, with a really nice concentration of fruit and great natural acidity to complement the balance. The fruit on the nose is flecked with some peppery aromas that really bring this wine full circle. Such a pleasant wine.
VINEPAIR.COM, May 2022
90 points, 2021 Grenache Rosé
A 100 percent estate-grown Grenache from Oregon’s Umpqua Valley AVA, this rosé is light in color and texture. Citrus makes up the majority of its fruit character, with pink grapefruit and tangerine jostling for position on nose and palate, and setting up a refreshing, zesty finish. Stick this bottle on ice for pool parties and beach days.

WINE ENTHUSIAST
91 points, 2018 Grenache
Grenache is carving out an important role in southern Oregon. Here it shows its potency and muscle, bumping up against some alcoholic heat in pursuit of the ripest possible fruit. Dense black cherry, root beer and clean earth flavors combine, with ample acidity. The tannins are in a lighter supporting role. This wine would be great to try with anything seasoned with chipotle.
91 points, 2018 Tinta Amarela
This Portuguese grape is dark-skinned and full-bodied. Though rare in the U.S., it is part of Abacela's ongoing exploration of Iberian varieties. The strong tannins bring black tea astringency and flavors of dried leaves around brambly blackberry fruit. It's a savory wine but layered and ageworthy. A great bottle to toss in and mystify your friends during any blind tasting of tannic reds.
90 points & Editors' Choice, 2018 Fiesta Tempranillo
From the winery that introduced Tempranillo to the West Coast, this affordable bottle invites with open aromas of chocolate and cherries, moving into a generous palate with more depth and detail than might be expected at this price. It's nicely layered with brambly fruit, sweet herbs, sandalwood and a wash of mocha. All balanced and forward yet persistent, it's a lovely wine.
90 points, 2017 Barrel Select Tempranillo
Among a broad portfolio of estate-grown Tempranillo, this shows the tobacco flavors first and foremost. Dried leaves, dried cherry fruit and a touch of peat moss are amplified through the midpalate and into the finish. Aged 21 months in oak, this is in prime drinking condition.
90 points, 2017 Syrah
This is tannic to be sure, but very expressive of the particular characteristics of the grape. It's packed with purple and black berry fruits, along with a seam of cola and a broad foundation of clean moist earth. The mix of fruit, acidity, tannins and savory earth is well-balanced, though the finer details found in some top-tier southern Oregon Syrahs are muted.
90 points, 2018 Tannat
This sturdy red is known for its muscular tannins, which are well managed here. Savory brambly blackberry flavors reflect a Zin-like character, though with extra tannic grip. The flavors broaden out through the lengthy finish, astringent and layered with caramel and vanilla.

WINE ENTHUSIAST, November 2021
91 points & Editors' Choice, 2020 Grenache Rosé
There's a lovely rosewater flavor that takes control here, lightly skimming along into a thicker midpalate with pretty cherry fruit. As usual with the better Oregon rosés, this one offers depth and balance, with precise acidity and hints of fresh herbs. The flavors linger and evolve through a long finish. Rosés don't generally age more than a year or two, but this one should drink well for at least that long. P.G.
90 points, 2020 Albariño
Spicy and full-bodied, this punches up sharp skin flavors along with ripe apple, pear, peach and melon fruits. Despite the moderate alcohol, it's got a little burn resonating through the finish, which also brings a light saline note. P.G.

GREAT NORTHWEST WINE
Excellent, 2017 Fiesta Tempranillo, Great Northwest Wine, January 13, 2021
"In many regards, there are two wines released each year that serve as the Northwest’s emblematic expressions of Spain’s signature grapes Albariño and Tempranillo. Both hail from Abacela – the country’s commercial-scale launching pad for both varieties – and here’s the red example of the style reminiscent of the Ribera del Duero. Billed as fresh and fruity, Fiesta is the approachable ambassador of Tempranillo while offering lots of layers with gusto. Founding winemaker Earl Jones’s research with Clone 2 Tempranillo is seen as the key to this program. There’s an inkiness to the nose of elderberry and brambleberries, but also a spicy gaminess bringing pinches of cumin and sage. A deliciously massive entry of bold purple fruit gathers up some musculature on the midpalate that leads out with a nibble of Western serviceberry in the finish. Suggested pairings include chorizo, Manchego cheese and anything off the grill."
Outstanding!, 2019 Grenache Rosé, Great Northwest Wine, October 1, 2020
"As much acclaim as the Jones family has merited for its work with Albariño, Tempranillo and Port programs, they’ve also earned five career Platinums from Wine Press Northwest magazine via its rosé. That success began with the 2008 vintage – Andrew Wenzl’s first as head winemaker. His latest example has qualified for the 2020 Platinum via gold medals at three West Coast competitions, and our panel would agree with those awards. The festive color waves you in for some fun and tickles the fancy by bringing hints of pink grapefruit, Rainier cherry, honeydew melon and strawberry/watermelon. Its structure is compelling, clean and refreshing with a raspberry finish that’s ideal for tapas. This fall, 25% of Abacela’s sales of this rosé, its Albariño and Syrah will be donated to the Greater Douglas County United Way for wildfire relief."
WINE PRESS NORTHWEST, Fortified Wine Tasting, September 2020
Unanimously Outstanding!, 2014 Estate Port
If there’s tasting that focuses on varieties native to the Iberian Peninsula, bet on a wine from Abacela finishing near the top. In this case, it was an Abacela Port-style wine from the warm 2014 vintage that finished No. 1. Andrew Wenzl, in his second decade as winemaker for the Jones family, worked with five grapes found in Portugal for this superb effort. Harvest arrived Oct. 3 for this blend of Tempranillo (43%), Tinta Amarela (15%), Bastardo (17%), Tinta Cão (13%) and Touriga Naçional (12%) that comes together as a total package. It’s dense, fruit-forward, fresh and complex, featuring lots of dark purple fruit with hints of sweet herbs and nuttiness. Those layers of complexity finish with licks of cherry pie and butterscotch. And despite the hedonism, it’s still in its youth. (199 cases of 375-ml bottles, 55 cases of 750-ml bottles, 20.4% alc.)
Outstanding!, 2008 10-year Tawny Port
Tinta Roriz, the authentic clone used in Douro Port production, was an early trial at Abacela, and it formed the foundation of this beautifully aged tawny Port-style that includes Bastardo (30%), Tinta Amarela (11%), Tinta Cão (9%) and Touriga Naçional (6%). Earl Jones and his winemaker, Andrew Wenzl deemed the 2008 vintage as less than stellar for their traditional Port-style program, so they created a tawny project, which they split in half — one that would spend five years in barrel and the other in barrel for a decade. When in barrel at least seven years, the Portuguese refer to these styles as colheita, pronounced col-YATE-tuh. This serves as an ideal introduction to the world of Port-style wines, starting with its relative freshness and cherry-driven approach. Vibrant red fruit tones come with raisin, coffee, chocolate and vanilla notes and underlying leatheriness. There’s finesse, appropriate levels of sugar (9%) and a deliciously nutty finish. One judge said, “It has everything that I love.” And the Joneses suggest serving it with pecan pie or chocolate. (248 cases, 19% alc.)
Outstanding!, 2015 Estate Port
Four years of bottle aging by winemaker Andrew Wenzl has the current release of Abacela’s vintage Port-style program already in “Outstanding!” territory, and history indicates this is just a baby. As usual for the Southern Oregon wine industry’s iconic property, five traditional varieties come into play in the form of Tempranillo (37%), Tinta Amarela (28%), Tinta Cão (14%), Touriga Naçional (11%) and Bastardo (10%). They yield perfumy aromas of Marionberry, Simpkin’s Blackcurrant Drops, cherry soda, cedar and dried herbs. The fluid is dense yet friendly with dark cherry, plum and nutmeg. Its immense structure bodes well for cellaring — as this tasting would later reveal — finishing with cocoa powder and black currant. Enjoy with Black Forest Cake, a wedge of Stilton or toasted filberts. (300 cases of 375-ml bottles, 42 cases of 750-ml bottles, 19.5% alc.)
Outstanding!, 2001 Estate Port
The most mature — and priciest — entry into this tasting of Northwest fortified wines also ranked among the best. Historically, this is just the second commercial vintage-style Port by Earl Jones, and these were young vines at the time — seven-year-old Tinta Roriz and fifth-leaf Bastardo. (The Tinta Roriz ultimately under-performed and was grafted over to Grenache Alban a decade later.) It’s quite fascinating in that the nose presents itself as an aged red wine rather than “porty,” hinting at strawberry candy and dusty raspberry with notes of herbs and tobacco leaf. There’s nice richness and complexity to flavors with dusty dark red fruit, just a hint of Raisinet and a gentle yet sweet finish that screams for a cigar. Suggestions range from Stilton cheese, walnuts, honey-coated pecans and toffee. (14 cases, 20.3% alc.)

"Fiesta is the entry-level cuvée among four different Abacela Tempranillos. To say this wine overdelivers is to understate its impact. The estate-grown fruit sends up gamy scents that conjure up dreams of blood sausage and lead down a deep, dark entryway into a core of blue plum, black cherry and cassis fruits. Some barrel time adds licorice and clove, with tannic muscle invigorating the finish."
92 points & Editors' Choice, 2017 Albariño
"Nothing has changed here in this new vintage, and that's a good thing. Rich, leesy and dense with ripe fruit flavors of apple, pear, peach and guava, if anything it's even more generously endowed than the glorious 2015. Refreshing minerality completes the picture."
2015 Fiesta Tempranillo
Rated "Outstanding!" and Wine of the Week, by Wine Press Northwest, August 28, 2018
"A recent study by Wine Business Monthly magazine pointed out that while the Spanish red variety Tempranillo — pronounced temp-rah-KNEE-oh — is the world’s fourth-most planted grape, only 5 percent of the 9,091 wineries in the U.S. produce a Tempranillo. That includes 76 in Oregon, 54 in Washington and six in Idaho. Back in 1997, Southern Oregon's Earl Jones of Abacela became the first in the U.S. to grow, produce and bottle Tempranillo. That wine was a product of vines he planted on Memorial Day 1995. Along the way, his viticulture research and work in the cellar with clone 2 has been critical to the success of Abacela’s largest production Tempranillo — the approachable and ready-to-enjoy Fiesta. This latest release by head winemaker Andrew Wenzl shows great balance to the ripe plums and blackberry notes. A hint of mocha lingers in the background of tannins akin to plum skins. Judges from across the U.S. and Canada awarded this screw-capped red a gold medal at the 2018 Cascadia International Wine Competition in Richland, Wash."
