Winemaker's Tasting Notes
While typically called Grenache, the evidence indicating this grape’s ancient Spanish origins has compelled us to use Garnacha, its older Iberian name.
It was first planted at Abacela in 1995 as an experimental varietal and we have been repeatedly delighted with how well it matches the terroir of our estate in Southern Oregon’s Umpqua Valley.
Blackberries, raspberries, and red licorice aromas are followed on the palate by cherries, pomegranates, and blueberries. Deftly balanced acidity weaves around the velvety texture while the medium bodied finish lingers impressively.
This Garnacha is delightful now and will improve with proper cellaring over the next two to four years. We suggest a food pairing of hickory-fired lamb chops and thyme-Manchego polenta cakes.
